Mulch vs. Rock: What’s Best for Evergreen Beds?
When it comes to finishing your garden beds, the choice between organic mulch and decorative rock is a common dilemma for homeowners in the Evergreen State. Organic mulch, like bark or compost, is fantastic for soil health. It retains moisture, suppresses weeds, and breaks down over time to enrich the soil with vital nutrients. This is especially beneficial for plant health. However, it needs to be replenished every year or two. Decorative rock, on the other hand, is a long-lasting, one-time investment. It offers a clean, modern look and excellent drainage. However, it doesn't improve soil quality and can absorb and radiate heat, which may stress some plants. For most garden beds in our region, we recommend organic mulch to support healthy plant growth in our native soils. Rock can be an excellent choice for dry beds, pathways, or creating a specific aesthetic, but it's important to consider its impact on the plants around it.
